Overview

The Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica, also known as Kotta Palli or Kottepalli, is located in Fort Kochi, Kerala. Built by the Portuguese in 1505 with permission from the Cochin Raja, it serves as the cathedral church of the Diocese of Cochin. The original structure was elevated to cathedral status by Pope Paul IV in 1558 but was later demolished by the British in 1795. Rebuilt in 1887, the basilica was consecrated in 1905 and designated a basilica by Pope John Paul II in 1984 for its architectural and historical significance. Known for its Indo-European and Gothic style, it features impressive spires, a vibrant interior adorned with frescoes, murals, and stained glass windows, making it a revered landmark and tourist attraction in Fort Kochi.
